Worum es geht

School of economic thought founded by Carl Menger (1871), developed by Böhm-Bawerk and Wieser, systematised by Mises and Hayek, revived in America after Hayek's 1974 Nobel. Distinctives: methodological individualism, strict value subjectivism, attention to time and ignorance, capital as a heterogeneous structure, market competition as a discovery procedure, and scepticism of central planning and macro aggregates.

  • Is praxeology — a priori deduction from the action axiom — a defensible method for economics?

0 benannte Positionen · mainstream economics rejects apriorism; the school itself is split between Misesian and Hayekian readings

  • Does Austrian business cycle theory explain real business cycles?

0 benannte Positionen · outside the mainstream of macroeconomics; live internal research program (secondary deflation, empirical tests) — teach the critiques with the theory

  • Can a socialist economy calculate rationally?

0 benannte Positionen · partially vindicated in mainstream eyes after 1989; the historiography remains contested

  • Is the Austrian conception of capital (roundaboutness, period of production) coherent?

0 benannte Positionen · unresolved at the deepest level; modern Austrians answer with disaggregated structure models (garrison-2001)

  • Internal: is fractional-reserve banking under free competition stabilising or inherently cyclical?

2 benannte Positionen · unresolved internal controversy; both sides publish within the school

Mythen, die das Paket korrigiert

Verbreitete Behauptungen mit der Evidenz, die sie klärt oder begrenzt.

  • Austrian economics is the economics of Austria.

    conceptual-correction

It is a school of economic thought founded by Carl Menger in Vienna (1871), developed by Böhm-Bawerk, Mises and Hayek, and today centred mostly in the United States (George Mason University, the Mises Institute). It has no special connection to the modern Austrian economy or its policy.

  • Austrian economics is simply libertarian ideology with citations.

    boundary-correction

The analytical core — subjective value, marginal utility, economic calculation, the knowledge problem — is positive economics, parts of which the mainstream absorbed (Hayek's 1945 knowledge essay is among the most cited economics papers). Many Austrians draw libertarian conclusions, and some texts mix analysis with advocacy; a learner needs the distinction, not a denial of the entanglement. Read rothbard-1962 with that awareness.

  • Marginal utility is a measurable psychological quantity, and marginalism means calculating with utils.

    conceptual-correction

Austrian marginalism is ordinal and non-mathematical: acting individuals rank concrete alternatives at the margin. There are no utils, no measurement, and no interpersonal utility comparison — a point Menger's version of the marginal revolution never shared with Jevons and Walras.

  • Austrian business cycle theory says booms are too much investment, or that crises are caused by greed and speculation.

    conceptual-correction

The claim is malinvestment, not overinvestment: credit expansion pushes the market interest rate below the natural rate, falsifying the signal that coordinates saving with investment, so the composition of investment across time-stages goes wrong. The bust is the realignment of the capital structure with actual time preferences. Whether that mechanism explains real cycles is heavily contested (see the abct-validity controversy) — but the contested claim should at least be stated correctly.

  • Austrians are a monolith of gold-standard, 100-percent-reserve advocates.

    correction

Monetary institutions are an open internal controversy: the free-banking wing (Selgin, White) argues that competitive fractional-reserve note issue is stabilising — the direct opposite of the full-reserve position (Rothbard, Huerta de Soto, Salerno). Both sides publish within the school.
