Worum es geht
The science of stable individual differences in patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving. Its central result is the Big Five / five-factor model — Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Neuroticism, Openness/Intellect — reached independently by a lexical tradition (Galton, Allport-Odbert, Cattell, Tupes-Christal, Norman, Goldberg) and a questionnaire tradition (Costa and McCrae). Around that structure sit the field's big questions: how heritable traits are, how stable they are across the lifespan, whether and how they change, whether the structure is universal, and what — after Mischel's situationist critique — a trait even is.

Do broad traits meaningfully predict behaviour, or do situations dominate?
0 benannte Positionen · Resolved into interactionism: persons, situations and their interaction all carry variance; Fleeson's density-distribution work (fleeson-2001) is the standard synthesis. Both original camps claim vindication.
Are there really five factors — and is factor analysis of the lexicon a sound way to found a taxonomy?
0 benannte Positionen · Five remains the working consensus; HEXACO is a live, publishing rival; nobody serious claims the count is settled by nature rather than by robustness-plus-convention.
Is the five-factor structure a human universal?
0 benannte Positionen · Imposed-instrument evidence and emic-lexical evidence disagree; "universal among literate industrialised populations, weaker beyond" is the honest current summary.
What do twin-study heritability estimates actually establish?
0 benannte Positionen · Substantial heritability is not seriously in doubt; what the number means, and why molecular estimates undershoot it, remain genuinely open.
What in Jordan Peterson's material is trait psychology, and what is contested worldview wearing its vocabulary?
0 benannte Positionen · Not a scientific controversy inside personality psychology — the field's literature barely engages him — but a live public one. Package policy: teach the science from the primary literature; use the lens to route arriving learners; tier his popular material at 4 and say why; present the named critiques and his real academic record together, without hagiography or hit piece.
Mythen, die das Paket korrigiert
Verbreitete Behauptungen mit der Evidenz, die sie klärt oder begrenzt.
“People come in discrete personality types — introverts or extraverts, one of sixteen MBTI types.”
debunked
Measured trait scores distribute continuously and roughly normally; most people sit near the middle, exactly where type dichotomies cut. MBTI categories show weak test-retest stability (frequent type switching on retesting) and thin predictive validity; no bimodality appears at the type boundaries. Dimensional description carries the evidence.
“Personality tests are astrology in a lab coat — they just tell people what they want to hear.”
partly-right-wrongly-aimed
The Barnum effect is real and explains why feeling described proves nothing. But validated inventories are judged by different tests, and pass them: self-reports converge with observer ratings across instruments (mccrae-costa-1987), and trait scores prospectively predict mortality, divorce and work outcomes (roberts-2007-power), with most links surviving preregistered replication (soto-2019). The critique lands on unvalidated quizzes, not on the science of measurement.
“Personality is about 40 percent genetic, so that part of you can never change.”
debunked
Heritability partitions variance between people in a population; it says nothing about how fixed any individual is, and it changes with context. Highly heritable traits change: mean levels shift across the whole lifespan (roberts-walton-viechtbauer-2006) and interventions move traits within months (roberts-2017). Height is more heritable than any trait and still doubled its response to twentieth-century nutrition.
“Personality is finished by age 30 — after that it is set like plaster.”
debunked
Rank-order stability is high in adulthood but never total (about .74 at its peak, roberts-delvecchio-2000), and mean levels keep moving: conscientiousness and emotional stability rise well past 30 — the maturity principle (roberts-walton-viechtbauer-2006). The direct large-sample test of the plaster hypothesis found persistent change through early and middle adulthood (srivastava-2003).
“Psychology proved personality is a myth — behaviour is all about the situation.”
debunked-as-overcorrection
The critique targeted single-behaviour prediction, and there it was right. Aggregated behaviour is strongly predictable from traits (Epstein 1979; kenrick-funder-1988); within-person variability and stable between-person differences coexist (fleeson-2001); and Mischel's own CAPS model is a theory of stable personality signatures, not a denial of personality (mischel-shoda-1995). Modern effect-size analysis (Funder & Ozer 2019) shows situational classics and trait correlations are of similar magnitude.
