Two different questions travel under one name. The simulation hypothesis is the metaphysical claim that our world is a computer simulation — a modern member of a family of scenarios running from Plato's cave and Zhuangzi's butterfly through Descartes' demon to Putnam's brains in a vat. The simulation argument is Nick Bostrom's 2003 result: given substrate independence and a feasibility estimate, at least one of three propositions is true — near-certain extinction before posthumanity, near-total posthuman disinterest in running ancestor simulations, or we are almost certainly simulated. The argument establishes the disjunction, not the third disjunct. Around this sit a philosophy-of-mind premise that is genuinely open (substrate independence, denied by Searle), a probabilistic step that is the main target of the critical literature (Weatherson, Birch, Kipping, Carroll), a small empirical programme that gives narrow versions of the hypothesis observable content (Beane, Davoudi and Savage), a separate digital-physics lineage that is often mistaken for evidence (Zuse, Fredkin, Wheeler, Wolfram, 't Hooft), and Chalmers' claim that the whole scenario has been misfiled as skepticism when it is metaphysics.

The 2003 paper concludes a trilemma: at least one of three propositions is true — the human species is very likely to go extinct before reaching a posthuman stage, or any posthuman civilization is extremely unlikely to run a significant number of ancestor simulations, or we are almost certainly living in a simulation. The argument establishes that the three cannot all be false. It does not establish which holds, and the first two are not consolation prizes: near-certain extinction and near-total posthuman disinterest are substantive claims about the future. What the argument really delivers is a commitment trap — anyone who thinks posthumanity is likely and that posthumans would run ancestor simulations is thereby committed to the third disjunct. Bostrom states this in the paper, restates it in the FAQ on his own site, and has spent two decades correcting the collapse in interviews.

That framing is a popular restatement, not the argument. Three specific things separate them. It asserts the third disjunct rather than the disjunction. It supplies a number where no published derivation exists — the figure names no reference class and no anthropic principle, so it is not merely uncertain but undefined as stated. And the fidelity extrapolation addresses a question the argument does not turn on: the hard premise is substrate independence, not graphics. Bostrom's own stance is the contrast to teach — he declines to assert the third disjunct and describes his credence across the three as an admission of ignorance rather than a calculation. The remarks are worth studying as the canonical example of the distortion pipeline, not as a source.

Neither constant supports the reading. The Planck length is obtained by dimensional analysis from the gravitational constant, the reduced Planck constant and the speed of light. It is the scale at which quantum gravitational effects are expected to matter, not a measured minimum length and not an observed lattice spacing. Searches for exactly the graininess the claim asserts have come back empty: Planck-scale holographic-noise searches at the Fermilab Holometer returned null results, and Fermi observations of GRB 090510 constrained energy-dependent photon dispersion at or beyond the Planck energy for the simplest models. The speed of light is not a bandwidth cap either; it is the invariant speed in the structure of relativistic spacetime, the conversion factor between space and time in the metric, and no derivation connects it to a computational throughput. Note also the direction of the argument if a lattice ever were found: Beane, Davoudi and Savage take the trouble to derive what a lattice implies precisely because a bare cutoff would not by itself indicate a simulator. Discreteness is a property some physical theories have without anyone running them.

What the paper shows is narrower and more interesting. For quantum many-body systems exhibiting quantized gravitational responses, local quantum Monte Carlo methods necessarily encounter the sign problem, so the cost of that particular classical approach grows exponentially with system size. Four things follow, and the popular claim is none of them. The result is about a family of classical algorithms, not about all possible computation. It is a statement about efficiency, not about possibility. It says nothing about a simulator's own physics or resources, which are unconstrained by our physics in every version of the hypothesis. And Bostrom's ancestor simulation never required simulating the full quantum state of a universe — the on-demand detail mechanism exists precisely to avoid that. The honest reading of the result is that it strengthens Feynman's 1982 point about classical machines and quantum physics. Use the paper and its coverage side by side as the package's standing exercise in scope discipline.

Each phenomenon has a well-supported explanation in memory science, and the simulation reading adds no predictions. Déjà vu is a familiarity signal that fires without accompanying recollection; the review literature ties it to divided attention, partial cue overlap with an earlier experience, and in clinical settings to temporal-lobe activity. Memory is reconstructive rather than reproductive, so confident memories of things that did not happen are the expected case, not an anomaly: the wording of a single question reshapes what people report having seen, and in the DRM paradigm people reliably and confidently recall words that were never presented, because those words fit the gist. The Mandela effect is that mechanism operating on shared cultural material — and it has now been documented experimentally, with specific icons producing the same false memory across many people, at high confidence, reproducible when they draw from memory. Note the structure of the mistake: shared false memories are evidence about human memory, which is precisely where the effect was found. A claim that explains any observation whatever, including its absence, has not been supported by that observation.
